Hard Work, Good Times

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” -Margaret Mead

In September of 2010 Family Service Center was awarded a state grant to provide the Strengthening Families Program (SFP) to Galveston County families. By October of 2010 our small SFP team realized that we were in for A LOT of work! SFP is a 14-week life skills group. Each session begins with a family meal, and then 0-5 year olds go to Nursery, 6 – 11 year olds go to their Children’s group, 12-17 year olds go to the Pre-teen/Teen group, and parents have their own group. After an hour we all join back together for Family Time and discuss what we’ve learned and what we hope to accomplish over the next week.

Our fearless leader, Trenise Mims, MA, M.Ed, did an amazing job during this difficult year – always keeping us laughing & reminding us of why we were doing what we were doing. In January of 2012 FSC partnered with the After-School Centers on Education (ACE)/21st Program to provide Strengthening Families once-a-week in Galveston Island schools. During one of these session a Group Leader came up to me and said, “Did I ever tell you why I chose to be a SFP Group Leader this year?” I responded no, and she began telling me her story.

Last year, she was a parent in the program with her child. One of our group leaders saw that she was having a difficult time with her son, and started giving her different resources that she could use in the community. From medical resources to information about her son’s condition, for 14 weeks they worked together to make home life a bit easier on everyone. “I don’t even remember her name”, she said laughingly, “but I learned so much and I wanted to assist other parents in the same way. That’s also why I’m going back to school to earn my degree in Social Work.”

It was a great story to hear and a reminder that when we work towards positive change, positive change happens. Not only in her and her son’s life, but also in all the lives this one mom will touch throughout the years.
